Top Tips to Finding that Perfect Hunting Holster

So you’ve just purchased your new hunting handgun for your next trek out into the wild. Maybe it’s equipped with a scope or maybe you opted for the longer barrel. In any case, here comes the usual following question – What’s the perfect Hunting Holster? You have heard all the horror stories of nylon holsters being noisey, and that’s not what we’re after. So what are your options?

Let’s start with the basic gun with an 8inch barrel and larger. Thе Ñ€rоblеm here is due to the barrel length it takes a long draw length to clear the barrel from the holster. In many cases people revert to a crossdraw holster to be able to give them the clearance needed. Ross Leather Holsters makes this style of holster. Crossdraw holsters are ideal for stalking and walking in the woods. But here come the negatives – now you have about 8 inches or more of leather covered metal sticking out to the side getting in the way when you are getting in your treestand. Another downfall to this style of holster is accommodating handguns with scopes. This takes us to a whole new level of issues.

So why is it so hard to find a holster that accommodates a handgun with a scope. Hip holsters are ideal for the clean unscoped gun, however when you add a scope mounted to the top of the gun you now create the issue with clearance on the top (folded part of the holster). You have to remove material from the holster so it can allow the scope mount to clear. This creates a problem because without solid support or some sort of retention system your gun could fall out. There are some holsters on the market that will provide a strap around the front securing the gun in place. But what if you’re in a scenario where the big buck walks in front of you and suddenly hears you unsnapping your holster – not ideal.

However when drawing, depending on the length of the barrel, you may need to raise your hand as high as the  top of your head to clear the holster. There are a few manufacturers on the market that make a holster where basically the Revolver rocks forward out of the holster, making for a faster short draw access. Allessi Holsters was one of the manufacturers and I believe the original inventor of this style revolver holster. Unfortunately they have fallen to the economic times and are no longer in business. I have seen others on the internet building similar holsters, so with a little searching you can find someone. These are ideal again for the nonscoped hunting revolvers, but what do you do if you want to step up your game and add a scope.

Thеѕе Chest Holsters provide the ideal location for keeping your gun close for easy access and depending on the holster, a short fast draw. Some manufacturers on the market allow for scope mounts and best of all, in many cases provide for interchangeable holsters. These holsters are nice because like the Shoulder holster they shift the weight from your belt to your shoulders making it much more comfortable.
