There are four levels of retention for holsters, each offering varying degrees of security to suit different operational needs:
Level 1 Holsters: These holsters primarily rely on friction to secure the firearm. The design uses the natural resistance between the gun and the holster material to prevent the weapon from falling out or being easily grabbed. Level 2 Holsters: In addition to friction, Level 2 holsters incorporate a secondary restraint mechanism to enhance firearm security. This additional feature could be a thumb break, a flip-up strap, an automatic locking system, or another securing device. These holsters are favored by law enforcement and security personnel who may face situations where there’s a risk of someone else trying to grab the firearm.
Level 3 Holsters: These holsters combine friction with two additional restraining mechanisms, providing an even higher level of security. Each restraint must be actively disengaged, which can involve multiple motions such as pressing a button and then swinging a hood.
